Better solar panels are coming our way, all thanks to SolarCity.

We all know of the revolutionary company, Tesla Motors, and their eccentric CEO, Elon Musk. Well, SolarCity, a company co-founded by Musk has just unveiled their new solar panels which are the most effective in the world.

The new solar panels are to be manufactured in the US, with a module efficiency of a little over 22% , that can generate 33-40% more energy than a standard solar panel. A third party photovoltaic company, the Renewable Energy Test Centre, tested and confirmed the results.

The CEO of SolarCity told Fortune Magazine that the company is aiming for 55 cents per watt.

“The breakthrough here is high efficiency at a lower cost,” said SolarCity Chief Technology Officer Peter Rive in an interview. “In the past those have been opposed to one another.”

The new solar panel is a hybrid between a crystalline panel, the traditional kind, and a silicone model, with the intent of being utilised in schools, homes, businesses, and in large scale projects.

The improvements that come with the new panel will have a massive impact in the manner in which we utilise solar power minimising our carbon footprint.

The company said that once the main line is running, they will build enough of them to equip up to 200,000 homes per year.

“We’re lowering the costs so that we’re able to control our own destiny,” said Rive. “The company has been laser focused on cost reduction and this represents a [dramatic] change in our cost structure.”

The use of solar is steadily becoming more and more popular, with a report from the International Energy Agency in 2014 suggesting that solar can generate a quarter of the world’s energy supply by 2050.

“All energy is ultimately derived for the sun and harvesting it directly through solar power seems to be the best way to transition to renewable energy,” said Rive. “The transformation will take many decades but we’re seeing the rate of growth in solar being massive.”
